How Accessible Boarding Works
Enroll in the Ride Accessibility Program at Guest Services first. You receive a sheet listing the rides you can ride, then you request a boarding time at each ride entrance. At the coasters and the two water rides, mobility-impaired guests see the ambassador at the entrance, get a return time from the virtual queue, then board through the ride exit or the marked ADA entrance. At the smaller family rides there is no return time: go to the exit gate and you may wait one or two cycles. Every coaster requires a transfer out of a wheelchair or ECV.
Two things decide more rides than height does. First, extremity requirements: Arctic Rescue and Electric Eel need two functioning hands and two functioning legs, and leg prosthetics are not permitted on either, or on Emperor. Second, restraint fit: test seats sit at Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, Emperor, and Manta, and the park says riders of larger size may not fit those four plus Journey to Atlantis and Riptide Rescue. Use the test seats early, before you spend a return time.

The Major Rides
1. Emperor
Type: Floorless dive coaster | Height: 52" min, 78" max | Transfer: Yes
California's first floorless dive coaster: a slow climb, a hold at the edge, then a beyond-vertical plunge with your feet dangling. See the ambassador at the entrance for a return time, then board at the exit. The requirement is either one functioning hand plus one functioning arm plus two functioning legs, or two functioning hands plus one functioning leg, with leg amputations at or below the knee. Guests with an above-knee amputation may ride with a separate three-point harness if they have one functioning hand, one functioning leg, and enough leg remnant to secure. Prosthetic legs are not permitted. Broken collarbone, neck brace, or any hard cast rules you out. Test seat at the entrance. Service animals not permitted.
2. Electric Eel
Type: Multi-launch coaster | Height: 54" | Transfer: Yes
Forward and backward launches into a twisting loop and an inversion, and the tallest height requirement in the park. See the ambassador at the main entrance for a return time, then board at the exit. You need full upper and lower body control, two functioning legs and feet, two functioning arms and hands, and the ability to put both feet under the shin pad. Leg prostheses are not permitted, and arm or hand prostheses must be secured. Broken collarbone, neck brace, or any hard cast rules you out. Test seat available. Service animals not permitted.
3. Manta
Type: Family launch coaster | Height: 48" | Transfer: Yes
Two launches and a swooping layout through a media tunnel, and the best bridge ride between the family rides and the big three. See the ambassador at the entrance for a return time, then board at the exit. You need sufficient total body control, at least one functioning hand, and two functioning legs. Amputations above the ankle may not ride. Amputations below the ankle may ride with two functioning hands, and an amputated arm or hand is fine with one functioning hand and two functioning legs. Test seat available. Service animals not permitted.
4. Arctic Rescue
Type: Straddle launch coaster | Height: 48" min, 77" max | Transfer: Yes
Three launches up to 40 mph on a snowmobile-style straddle seat, which is the accessibility consideration: you sit astride the vehicle rather than in a bucket seat. See the ambassador at the entrance for a return time, then board at the exit. You must be able to grip with two functioning hands and brace with two functioning legs. Leg prosthetics are not permitted. Cervical collar, neck brace, broken collarbone, or any arm or leg cast rules you out. Test seat available. Service animals not permitted.
5. Journey to Atlantis
Type: Water coaster | Height: 42" | Transfer: Yes
A flume and coaster hybrid with a steep plunge and a genuinely soaking finish, plus dark enclosed sections with strobe effects. Guests between 42 and 48 inches need a supervising companion. See the ambassador at the entrance for a return time, then board through the ADA entrance. You must be able to hold on with one functioning hand and brace with one functioning leg. Cervical collar, neck brace, broken collarbone, full arm cast, braced arm cast, or full leg cast rules you out. Skip it if dark enclosed spaces or strobes are a trigger. Service animals not permitted.
6. Shipwreck Rapids
Type: River rapids | Height: 42" min, 74" max | Transfer: Yes
A round raft through rapids and a waterfall finale, and everyone gets wet. The rides page lists 42 inches minimum and 74 inches maximum. The printed guide says guests between 42 and 48 inches need a supervising companion, so plan on that if you have a rider in that range. See the ambassador at the entrance for a return time, then come back to the main entrance to board. You need one functioning hand and one functioning leg, or two functioning hands with legs amputated at or below the knee. Cervical collar, neck brace, broken collarbone, or braced arm cast rules you out. Service animals not permitted.
7. Bayside Skyride
Type: Gondola over Mission Bay | Height: None; under 56" accompanied | Transfer: Yes
A slow round trip out over the bay and back, and the calmest ride in the park. Children under 56 inches need a supervising companion. Mobility-impaired guests see the ambassador at the exit and may wait one or two cycles. Gondolas hold three adults and one child. Guests who cannot sit upright independently must be accompanied. Service animals are permitted if the animal fits comfortably and safely inside the gondola. Skip it if heights or enclosed spaces are a problem.
8. Skytower
Type: Observation tower | Height: None; under 48" accompanied | Transfer: Varies
A rotating capsule up a 320-foot tower with a view across the bay to the Pacific and downtown. Children under 48 inches need a supervising companion. See the ambassador at the entrance for boarding instructions and expect to wait one or two cycles. Guests who cannot sit upright independently must be accompanied. Service animals are permitted if the animal fits comfortably and safely inside the capsule.
9. Tentacle Twirl
Type: Wave swinger | Height: 48" solo; 40" to 48" accompanied | Transfer: Yes
A jellyfish-themed swing ride. Riders between 40 and 48 inches ride in the double swing with a three-point harness beside a supervising companion. Mobility-impaired guests go to the exit gate left of the entrance and may wait one or two cycles. You need one functioning hand and one functioning leg and must be able to straddle the seat. Guests without hands may ride with one functioning arm and one functioning leg in a specific seat. Full leg cast rules you out. Maximum weight per seat is 297 pounds. Service animals not permitted.
10. Octarock
Type: Swinging pendulum | Height: 36" solo; 31" to 36" accompanied; 73" max | Transfer: Yes
A gentle rocking ship and the lowest height requirement in the park. Mobility-impaired guests go to the exit gate left of the entrance and may wait one or two cycles. You need one functioning arm and one functioning leg. A double above-knee amputation requires a well-secured prosthetic. Casts must fit comfortably inside the ride. Service animals not permitted.
11. Rescue Rafter
Type: Swinging, spinning boat | Height: 42" or accompanied | Transfer: Yes
A rescue-boat themed family ride that sways and spins. Mobility-impaired guests go to the exit gate right of the entrance and may wait one or two cycles. Hand-held infants are not permitted. You need one functioning hand and one functioning leg, or two functioning hands with legs amputated at or below the knee. Cervical collar, neck brace, broken collarbone, or braced arm cast rules you out. This is one of the three rides where service animals are permitted, provided the guest and the animal fit inside the ride unit.
12. Rescue Riders, Tidepool Twist, and Sea Dragon Drop
Type: Family flat rides | Height: 48" or accompanied; 42" or accompanied; 42" or accompanied | Transfer: Yes
Rescue Riders is an aerial carousel, Tidepool Twist a spinner, and Sea Dragon Drop a junior drop tower. All three load through the exit gate, where you may wait one or two cycles, and all three need one functioning hand or arm plus one functioning leg. Rescue Riders and Tidepool Twist follow the same cast rules as Rescue Rafter and do not allow hand-held infants. Sea Dragon Drop requires a well-secured prosthetic for a double above-knee amputation. The rides page says 45 inches in Sea Dragon Drop's description and 42 inches in its filter tag, and the printed guide says 42 inches, so confirm at the sign. Service animals not permitted on any of the three.
13. Riptide Rescue
Type: Spinning boat ride | Height: 45"; 45" to 50" accompanied | Transfer: Yes
A classic spinner themed to sea turtle rescue. It appears in the printed accessibility guide but not on the park's current rides page, so confirm it is operating before you plan around it. Enter through the disabled entrance next to the operator booth and expect to wait one or two cycles. You need one functioning hand and one functioning leg, or two functioning hands with legs amputated at or below the knee. Riders of larger size may not be accommodated. Service animals not permitted.
Accessibility Quick Reference
- Lowest height requirement: Octarock at 31 inches accompanied, then Tentacle Twirl at 40 inches accompanied.
- Best first coaster: Journey to Atlantis at 42 inches, then Manta at 48 inches.
- Test seats: Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, Emperor, Manta.
- Riders of larger size may not be accommodated: Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, Emperor, Journey to Atlantis, Manta, Riptide Rescue.
- Leg prosthetics not permitted: Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, Emperor. Manta does not permit amputations above the ankle.
- Service animals permitted: Bayside Skyride, Rescue Rafter, Skytower only.
- Soakers: Journey to Atlantis and Shipwreck Rapids.
- No transfer, no height check: Shark Encounter, Turtle Reef, Orca Underwater Viewing, Penguin Encounter, the touch pools, and every amphitheater presentation. Wheelchair seating and companion seating are available at every amphitheater.
