Overview

The Giant Dipper is one of the most significant roller coasters in North America. Built in 1924 by Arthur Looff, it is a National Historic Landmark - only one of two roller coasters in the country to hold that designation. It has been operating continuously on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for over 100 years, thrilling multiple generations of riders. The out-and-back wooden layout is 2,640 feet long and features 13 hills with significant airtime. The ride is set directly on the boardwalk with ocean views throughout.

What to Expect

The Giant Dipper is a classic wooden coaster in the truest sense. The climb up the first hill is slow and creaky - the sound of the chain lift, the smell of the ocean, the wooden structure visible all around you. The first drop is steep and fast, leading into a series of hills that deliver genuine floater airtime. The turns feature lateral forces that push riders to the outside of the seats. It's rougher than modern steel coasters, but that roughness is part of the authenticity. At the end, you're left with that particular feeling that only a classic wooden coaster produces: half-euphoria, half-disorientation.

Accessibility

Riders must transfer from any mobility device to the wooden coaster car. The ride's vintage construction means the boarding platform has a step up into the car. Lap bar restraints only - no over-the-shoulder. Given the ride's age and physical nature, guests with mobility concerns should assess boarding requirements carefully. Accessible boarding assistance from staff is available - ask at the ride entrance.

Tips

Ride the Giant Dipper within the first 30–60 minutes after the park opens (11am). It consistently has the park's longest waits by early afternoon on summer weekends. The back rows deliver the strongest airtime on the drops; front rows offer the best view of the layout. The ride experience changes noticeably depending on seat position - trying different rows on multiple visits reveals different aspects of the same coaster.

Nearby Rides

Double Shot (tower drop) is nearby in the main boardwalk area. Typhoon (water flume) is a natural cool-down follow-up on hot days. The ocean beach is steps away for a post-coaster decompression.
