Universal Studios Hollywood One-Day Strategy

How to cover both lots, what to prioritize, and how to time your AAP return windows so you spend less time waiting and more time doing.

⚠️ Policies and park hours change. Always verify current hours, Express Pass availability, and AAP procedures at universalstudioshollywood.com before your visit.

Before You Arrive

Universal Studios Hollywood rewards planning. Three things to do before you leave home:

  1. Buy tickets online. Gate prices are highest on the day of the visit. Online purchase typically saves $20 to $30 and avoids the ticket window line on arrival.
  2. Check the park calendar for Special Events. Halloween Horror Nights (September through early November) changes the park's entire afternoon/evening configuration. Seasonal events affect pricing, hours, and crowd volume significantly. Go to universalstudioshollywood.com and look at the date you're planning.
  3. If using AAP: pre-register with IBCCES. The IAC is optional but streamlines Guest Relations processing on arrival. Register at accessibilitycard.org at least 48 hours before your visit. See the full accessibility guide for the complete pre-registration walkthrough.

Arrival Strategy

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the listed park open time. Universal opens the gates 15 to 20 minutes early on most days, and being among the first guests inside is one of the highest-value decisions of the day.

If driving: give yourself extra time to exit the parking structure and reach the entrance. The parking structure is large and the walk to the front gates, through CityWalk, takes 8 to 12 minutes.

By Metro: the B Line (Red Line) Universal City/Studio City station is a legitimately good option. The station is wheelchair accessible with elevators. A free shuttle or an uphill walk brings you to the CityWalk entrance. Arriving by Metro means you bypass the parking structure entirely - useful on peak days when parking wait times add 20 to 30 minutes.

Hour-by-Hour Strategy

Opening to 10:30am: Lower Lot First

This is the most important decision of the day. Go directly to the escalators (or elevator) and get to the Lower Lot before the crowds arrive. The Lower Lot has fewer rides but they all have long wait times once the bulk of guests arrive after 10:30am.

Lower Lot priority order:

  1. Jurassic World: The Ride - longest lines of any Lower Lot attraction by mid-morning
  2. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey - second highest demand
  3. Transformers: The Ride-3D
  4. The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash
  5. Flight of the Hippogriff

For AAP users: get to the Lower Lot and immediately request your first return time at Jurassic World. While waiting for that return window, ride Flight of the Hippogriff (lower demand, often walkable in the first 30 minutes). Then use your Jurassic World return time. Stack return times from there.

10:30am to 12:30pm: Wizarding World and Upper Lot Rides

Return to the Upper Lot as the Lower Lot starts backing up. The Wizarding World is best mid-morning on weekdays - crowds are manageable and the theming is worth time even if you're not riding. Hit Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge and DreamWorks Theatre in this window.

The Studio Tour runs continuously and you can board at any point without a long wait on most days. Building it into your mid-morning rotation works well - the 60-minute tram ride lets your group rest while covering a major attraction.

12:30pm to 2pm: Lunch Break

This is when the park hits peak wait times across both lots. It is the worst time to be in a queue. Use this window for lunch, the Studio Tour (if you haven't gone), or the WaterWorld live show (which runs on a schedule). WaterWorld is an excellent mid-day option - it's a sit-down show with a fan base among guests who have seen it multiple times, and it involves no queue wait if you arrive 10 minutes before the show time.

Food note: CityWalk dining is accessible from inside the park without re-entering. If your party wants a broader dining option without full restaurant pricing, the CityWalk walk is an option. Confirm the re-entry policy at Guest Relations before leaving the park.

2pm to 5pm: Second Round

Afternoon crowds in the Lower Lot have usually peaked and start declining after 3pm on weekdays. If you didn't get to Forbidden Journey in the morning, an AAP return time in the afternoon is worth pursuing. This window is also good for re-rides on Despicable Me and The Simpsons.

5pm to Close: Evening

Wait times typically drop across the park in the final 90 minutes before closing. This is the time for revisiting the Wizarding World (it's particularly atmospheric in the evening), re-rides on low-queue attractions, or a final pass through the Studio Tour if scheduling allows a same-day re-board.

AAP Scheduling Tips

The two highest-value AAP return times each day are Jurassic World and Forbidden Journey. Both are Lower Lot attractions. Getting return times on both of these before 11am is the most efficient way to use the AAP.

Remember: a party member can collect a return time on the AAP holder's behalf. If the pass holder needs to rest at the top of the escalator while others go to the Lower Lot ride entrances, that is a completely valid strategy. Confirm this with the team member at Guest Relations when collecting your AAP - it is explicitly allowed per Universal's program documentation.

Stack return times for different attractions simultaneously. You do not need to wait for one return time to be used before collecting another at a different ride.

What to Eat

Three options worth knowing:

  • Three Broomsticks (Wizarding World): Butterbeer, Shepherd's Pie, and Chicken dinner in an immersive setting. Worth the experience once. Tables fill quickly at meal times - arrive early or late.
  • Jurassic Cafe (Lower Lot): Straightforward counter service. Convenient if you're already in the Lower Lot and want a quick bite without returning upstairs.
  • Minion Cafe (Upper Lot, near Despicable Me): Family-friendly, reasonably priced counter service. Good for groups with picky eaters.

Finding Hotels

The Hilton and Sheraton Universal are within a short walk or free shuttle ride of the park. If you're visiting for multiple days, staying within walking distance removes parking friction and lets you leave and return during the mid-day crowd peak.
